The Top Moving Companies in the United States

October 14, 2026

Background

Buying the right home is only half of a relocation. The other half is getting your life there, intact and on schedule. And with U.S. housing inventory at its highest level since 2019, according to the National Association of Realtors, more buyers now have the choice and time to move. That makes choosing a mover one of the most important decisions in any relocation.

The stakes are high. A cross-country move for a large household can cost thousands of dollars, and the industry has a well-documented fraud problem. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), which regulates interstate movers, warns consumers to avoid any mover that does not display a U.S. DOT number and never to sign blank or incomplete documents.

This guide brings together the 2026 rankings from Forbes Advisor and Move.org, the federal rules that protect you, and the questions executives and luxury homeowners should ask before handing over a home's contents.

Rankings reflect each publisher's own methodology. Global Search Executive Real Estate Advisory has no affiliation with any company listed.

How the Rankings Were Built

Forbes Advisor, in a list verified September 21, 2026, says it reviewed 45 companies across 76 metrics and requested more than 200 custom quotes. Pricing and company information carried the most weight (32%), followed by customer sentiment (20%). Move.org's 2026 Best Movers Awards, published in April, judged companies by moving scenario. Staff posed as customers to test quoting, and companies were cut for unresolved regulatory issues, unclear carrier or broker status, or misleading pricing. As Move.org put it, "people don't search for movers by category — they search by need."

The Leading Movers, by Need

The national van lines: Allied, Atlas, United, North American and Mayflower. These are the household names, each working through networks of local agents. Allied serves all 50 states and more than 130 countries, which matters for international assignments. Atlas works through more than 350 independently owned agents and, according to Forbes Advisor, does not require a deposit. North American runs about 1,800 trucks and offers satellite tracking, crating for chandeliers and wine collections, and vehicle and boat shipping. United is Move.org's pick for homes of three or more bedrooms or with specialty items. Because each uses local agents, service can vary by city, so ask who will actually pack, load and drive.

Premium full-service: JK Moving Services. JK earned "premium" honors from both Forbes Advisor and Move.org. It offers a dedicated move coordinator, 24/7 support, antique and piano handling, reusable crates and climate-controlled storage. Its Forbes Advisor sample quote for a roughly 635-mile Brooklyn-to-Charlotte move was about $6,300, higher than most rivals, which reflects its service level.

Predictable pricing: American Van Lines and Colonial Van Lines. American Van Lines uses its own crews and offers flat-rate pricing on many moves, plus specialists for art, antiques and pianos. Colonial scored 4.9 out of 5 with Forbes Advisor for its digital planning tools, though it requires a deposit and does not serve Alaska or Hawaii.

Containers and storage: PODS and U-Pack. For buyers who need to sell before they buy, or who are renting first, a portable container can bridge the gap. Move.org named PODS the best overall moving and storage solution and U-Pack the most affordable container.

Executive relocation management: Cartus Concierge. For senior executives whose employer manages the move, Cartus launched Cartus Concierge in May 2026. It covers multi-phase and international moves, fine-art and temperature-controlled wine shipping, temporary luxury housing, immigration support, and household staff and pet relocation. "Cartus Concierge was designed to meet and exceed the evolving needs of global organizations and their leaders," said Matt Tebbe, Cartus president and CEO.

Before You Sign: Federal Protections

FMCSA's official booklet, Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move, sets out rules every interstate mover must follow:

  • Verify the mover. Interstate movers and brokers must be registered and have a USDOT number. FMCSA notes a company can be registered without being authorized to move household goods, so check both at protectyourmove.gov.
  • Know your estimate. A binding estimate means you cannot be required to pay more than the amount shown for the listed goods and services. With a non-binding estimate, the mover cannot require more than 110% of the estimate at delivery and must bill any balance later.
  • Choose your coverage. The free "released value" option covers no more than 60 cents per pound, per article, so a 10-pound item worth thousands is covered for about $6. Full value protection requires the mover to repair, replace or pay for lost or damaged items. Items worth more than $100 per pound must be declared in writing.
  • File claims on time. You have 9 months from delivery to file a loss or damage claim.
  • Report problems. Complaints go to protectyourmove.gov or 1-888-DOT-SAFT (1-888-368-7238).

If You're Buying

  • Book movers once you have a firm closing date. Get at least three written estimates, and ask for an in-home or video survey so the price reflects what you actually own.
  • Plan for a gap. If closing and move-out dates don't line up, ask about storage-in-transit or containers.
  • Insure what matters. Art, wine, antiques and pianos may need full value protection, a written inventory and possibly a specialty fine-art handler.

If You're Selling

  • Coordinate the move with the closing. Confirm your possession date in the contract before booking a mover.
  • Declutter before quotes. Moves are often priced by weight and services, so fewer items can mean a lower bill.
  • Keep the home show-ready. Pack off-season and personal items early, which can help with showings too.

If You're Relocating

  • Ask about your employer's relocation package. Many companies use relocation management firms and preferred movers, and some cover packing, storage and temporary housing.
  • Rent first if needed. A furnished rental plus short-term storage lets you learn the new area before you buy.
  • For international moves, confirm the mover's overseas network, customs support and insurance terms.

If You're Investing

  • Furnished rentals. Relocating executives who rent first often need furnished homes for 30 to 180 days. Check local short-term rental rules and HOA restrictions.
  • Watch employer announcements. Large job announcements, like those we have covered in Maryland, Austin and Columbus, can bring waves of relocation demand. Timing and scale vary.
  • Be patient and get advice. Base decisions on current rents and financing, and consult qualified financial, legal and tax advisors.

The Bottom Line

No single moving company is best for everyone. National van lines like Allied, Atlas and United offer reach and options. JK Moving and American Van Lines appeal to those who want more hands-on service or predictable pricing. Executives with complex moves may benefit from a relocation manager such as Cartus. Whatever you choose, verify the USDOT number, get a written estimate and choose full value protection for anything you can't easily replace.
